Judge suspends interrogation due to Mladić's ill health

BELGRADE -- Belgrade Higher Court's War Crimes Department Judge Milan Dilparić this evening suspended his interrogation of Ratko Mladić.

Citar
The decision came due to the poor condition of the suspect's physical and mental health, said reports.

Mladić's lawyer Miloš Šaljić stated for the media that Dilparić attempted to interview Mladić, but that he failed due to the former general's inability to communicate.

The judge could not even manage to have Mladić confirm his personal data, said the lawyer, adding that his client on several occasions attempted to talk to the prosecutors, "especially to Deputy War Crimes Prosecutor Bruno Vekarić".

But Šaljić said that his client spoke incoherently. He denied reports that Mladić was examined by doctors earlier today, saying this was yet to happen.

Mladić's lawyer expects that the judge will tomorrow attempt to continue the interview.

Šaljić added that his client was aware that he had been placed under arrest and of his current whereabouts, and that he did state that he "did not recognize the Hague Tribunal".

Mladić also asked about his family, Šaljić said. They are expected to visit him in custody tomorrow.

The lawyer confirmed that although armed during the arrest which took place earlier on Thursday, Mladić did not wish to use his weapons.

Earlier this afternoon, a convoy of vehicles left the headquarters of the intelligence agency BIA, and entered the Special Court's yard around 16:00 CET.

Mladić was also to hear the Hague indictment issued against him, after which the court was to decide on his extradition to the UN war-crimes court.

The former military leader of Serbs in Bosnia has the right to appeal that decision.

The final word on the extradition will be given by the Serbian Ministry of Justice. The procedure could take up to a week.

Earlier in the day, Serbian President Boris Tadić confirmed during a news conference held in Belgrade that Mladić had been arrested.

B92 learned that Mladić was not wearing a beard or any disguise, and that his appearance showed he had "aged considerably".

According to this, one of his arms is paralyzed.

The 69-year-old did not resist arrest, and was "very cooperative", said our sources.

Reports earlier on Thursday said that BIA members assisted by police, arrested Mladić in the village of Lazarevo, near the town of Zrenjanin in northern Serbia.

The villagers who spoke to reporters said they were "unaware that anyone named Milorad Komadić lived there", but that they this morning "spotted police at the Mladić household" - the family are reportedly relatives of the former Bosnian Serb military commander.

This is consistent with Interior Minister Ivica Dačić's statement made this evening, when he denied that Mladić was hiding using an assumed identity. Early reports said that a man named "Milorad Komadić, who strongly resembled Mladić" was arrested.

Mladić is wanted by the Hague Tribunal on charges of genocide and war crimes committed in Bosnia during the 1992-95 war.

Eyewitness describes Mladić arrest

Ratko Mladić was arrested in Lazarevo, in the house of his relative identified with his initials B.M., Tanjug news agency was told by an eyewitness who wished to remain anonymous.

According to Tanjug's correspondent, Mladić's first neighbor said that he was in the house at the moment of the arrest operation and that he helped the Hague indictee put his clothes on.

Inhabitants of Lazarevo said that security forces broke into the house of B.M., where he used to live alone, around 05:30 CET.

Several dozen villagers are not allowing journalists to approach the house in which Mladic was allegedly arrested blocking the road with a trailer.

There are police officers in the village.

According to eyewitnesses, who also wanted to stay anonymous, police forces searched three more houses of "immigrants from Bosnia-Herzegovina" on Thursday morning.

19 years since abduction in Štrpci

BELGRADE -- Monday will mark 19 years since the crime in the village of Štrpci, close to the border with Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Citar
Members of a paramilitary unit took 19 non-Serb citizens of the former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) from a train at the Štrpci station and killed them.

The Serbian War Crimes Prosecutor's Office announced the continuation of relevant investigation.

The prosecutor's office found new information about the crime in the village of Štrpci and announced that it would continue the investigation in cooperation with a number of witnesses, and also using information from a book written by Commander of the Avengers (Osvetnici) paramilitary unit Milan Lukić, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for this and other crimes by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY).

Serbian Deputy War Crimes Prosecutor Bruno Vekarić told Tanjug that the prosecutor's office still investigated the case, adding that the investigation was continuing in cooperation with the ICTY, the Serbian Interior Ministry MUP and BiH police, as well as with the help from the families of the victims.

"After finding the remains of two bodies in Lake Perućac, we now know which clue to follow in our further investigation," Vekarić said.

On the occasion of commemoration of the Štrpci crime anniversary, the Bosniak National Council announced that its delegation would today pay homage to the victims and lay flowers at the memorial in the town of Prijepolje, western Serbia.

The abduction of 18 Bosniaks and one Croat citizen from FRY happened at the Štrpci train station on February 27, 1993. The kidnapped people were executed near Višegrad, a town in eastern BiH.

The abduction of 19 citizens of former FRY from the train 671 at the Štrpci train station was carried out by the Avengers paramilitary formation from Republika Srpska.

According to the relevant ICTY indictment, the paramilitary unit's members took the abducted citizens to the village of Prelovo near Višegrad, robbed them of their money, jewelry and other valuable possessions and physically abused them in a primary school's gym.

The abducted train passengers were then tied up with wire and taken by a truck to a garage of a burned down house close to the banks of the river Drina where they were murdered.

The only individual convicted for his role in the crime is Nebojša Ranisavljević. He was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment by the FRY Higher Court in the town of Bijelo Polje (northern Montenegro) on September 9, 2002.

Two years later, the Montenegrin Supreme Court confirmed the verdict.

NATO called on to properly investigate civilian deaths

LONDON -- NATO has not conducted a proper investigation, or provided compensations for civilian casualties of its air strikes in Libya, said Amnesty International (AI).

Citar
Echoing similar criticism voiced by Russia this month, the international human rights NGO said that many Libyans, although not involved in the conflict between Muammar Gaddafi's regime and armed rebels, were nonetheless "killed or wounded in the NATO bombing".

The western military alliance, however, has not conducted a proper investigation into their deaths, according to AI.

"NATO officials have on several occasions emphasized their commitment to protection of civilians. They cannot now sweep the deaths of so many civilians under the carper with some vague expression of regret, without a proper investigation into the bloody incidents," said a senior adviser to AI, Donatella Rovera.

The investigation should determine whether the civilian deaths were the result of any violation of international law and, if so, those responsible should be brought to justice, she said in a written statement.

Reuters news agency reported that NATO planes carried about 26,000 sorties in some 9,600 raids in which some 5,900 targets were destroyed throughout Libya before the end of military operations on October 31 2011.

Serbian police arrest KLA member

BELGRADE -- The Serbian police arrested a former member of the ethnic Albanian KLA, Buri Talak, near Merdare on the administrative line between central Serbia and Kosovo.

Citar
Talak was arrested on suspicion that he committed a war crime against Serb civilians in the Kosovo town of Prizren on June 16, 1999.

“Talak is charged with entering a home of a Serb family armed with automatic guns and knives, abusing the family physically together with two other accomplices, robbing them and then expelling them from the apartment in the neighborhood of Ortakov and Prizren,” Serbian Deputy War Crimes Prosecutor Bruno Vekarić told Tanjug.

According to him, the suspect is being kept in a detention facility in the the eastern town of Požarevac, while a local court is conducting the proceedings against him.

Vekarić expressed expectation that the case would be transferred to the Belgrade District Court’s War Crimes Department because the act had all the features of a war crime committed against the civilian society.

He noted that the War Crimes Prosecutor's Office could contact the damaged party, the Serb family against whom the crime was committed, which was very important for conducting the trial.
