MoD Sutanovac: Participation of Serbian Army members in peacekeeping missions continue in 2012

Citar
Minister of Defence Dragan Sutanovac said today that the equipment and weapons for the Serbian Army in 2012 will be purchased mostly from domestic firms, but also announced US donation in the form of 21 Hammer jeeps.

Sutanovac said in an interview to Tanjug news agency that the procurement for 2012 will include new trucks and uniforms.

He said that a modern Jeep will be developed with the factory "Zastava Trucks" that will be used by the Army and possibly by the police.

The American jeeps will be deployed in a special unit of the Serbian Army, which will then be the best-equipped unit of its kind in Europe.

Sutanovac announced continued participation in peacekeeping missions in 2012, as well as presentation of the Serbian Army forces but also a demonstration of political will to participate in resolving problems in the world.

He stated that there is a possibility that members of the Serbian defence system, within five UN peacekeeping missions, are deployed in southern Sudan, and also announced the possibility of increasing the number of our members in missions in Cyprus and Lebanon.

The stand-by arrangement that Serbia signed with the UN on its involvement in peacekeeping missions allows the UN to assess what the priority is and where the Serbian participation would be most useful, he said.

We are also talking with the EU and if they have some priorities, we will certainly analyse that and join those operations, he said.

Sutanovac also expressed the hope that the base "Jug" near Bujanovac, where several international exercises were organised past year, will turn into a regional training centre for participation in peacekeeping missions.

When it comes to cooperation with members of KFOR in Kosovo-Metohija, Sutanovac said that it is at a high level, adding that KFOR is still a factor of stability in the province.

We expect that the crisis that began in late July to be finally over and that KFOR returns within those frames defined by Resolution 1244 and Kumanovo agreement, the Minister said.

MISIONES DE PAZ DEL EJERCITO DE SERBIA

Citar

Cooperation between Serbia and Croatia in the field of defence has been intensified since the second half of the year 2010, and this cross-border meeting is a good opportunity for its further improvement.

BELGRADE CENTER FOR SECURITY POLICY VISITS THE 1ST TRAINING CENTER IN POZAREVAC

Citar
A group of 15 journalists visited the First Training Center in Pozarevac in the organization of the Belgrade Centre for Security Policy, as a continuation of a two-day training seminar "Responsible reporting and gender-equal security sector."

Welcoming the guests, the Acting Commander of the Training Center in Pozarevac Army Colonel Dusko Sljivancanin gave a presentation of the centre saying that its main task was training non-commissioned officers, professional soldiers, and soldiers on voluntary military service, including the members of fairer sex.

- As a sort of an old school officer I did have prejudice against women in the military, but I no longer, have them, because in practice they proved as responsible in the performance of all duties, and some even outdid their male counterparts-Colonel Sljivancanin said, noting that the Centre includes ten percent of women in uniform.

He pointed out that the physical training is the same for both sexes, but that the regular check standards have been adapted to women, while professional training is the same for all.

- We are equal with colleagues in all tasks placed before us, and perhaps even more is expected of us women - said Lt. Jasna Pesic, who is a resident doctor with the centre and is one of two women officers in the Centre.

Researcher of the Centre for Security Policy Maja Bjelos said that journalists who attended the course were covering the topic about women in the security in order to stress their contribution.

- I am convinced that after this visit the media will be even more willing to change the image of women in the security sector, although a lack of specialized journalists for reporting about the sector is still a major problem - said researcher Bjelos, one of the organizers of the Belgrade Centre for Security Policy.

The idea of the course was that through discussions and workshops journalists from print and electronic media are acquainted with the sector, and for responsible reporting on women and men who are employed or in training at these institutions. Study visits to institutions of security allowed them to learn more about the issue of access to information, confidential information, but also the challenges faced by employees in the sector, particularly women.

Training and study visits are one of the activities under the project Supporting Implementation of the National Action Plan for the implementation of UNSC Resolution 1325 in Serbia - Women, Peace and Security.

At the end of the visit, the Serbian Army Chief of Staff Lieutenant-General Ljubisa Dikovic gave an expose. He pointed out that defense system and this country need VTI, because, he said, the Army and the defense cannot succeed without the development of military research and science.

He noted with satisfaction that VTI had made progress in every sense - both organizational and technical - and that its management has a clear vision.

- I expect you to strengthen the army, to supply it with the equipment it objectively needs and to make sure that today we have an army that would know to use everything in the best possible way, of course, hoping that this armaments may never be used in practice. We have a good army, good officers, we have a good system, we are set on the right track towards progress, but our Military Technical Institute is also very good, said general Dikovic.
