Iran Sets up New Navy Base in Strait of Hormuz

Citar
MOSCOW, November 4 (RIA Novosti) - Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has established a new naval base in the Strait of Hormuz, the export route for around 25 percent of the world's crude oil, the Fars news agency said on Sunday.

The base, the fifth in the region, is located near Iran's southern port city of Bandar Lengeh in the Hormozgan province, some 1,100 km (700 miles) south of the capital Tehran.

IRGC Navy Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi said the zone of operations would cover an area from Qeshm island and Naze'aat Islands region to the western waters of the Kish island.

"The fifth naval zone was started to provide operational coverage for the Naze'aat Islands, bring about a turning point and start a new trend in the region," the agency quoted Fadavi as saying at the opening ceremony.

Iran has threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz at the end of the Persian Gulf in response to any attack from outside. Iran’s largest naval bases are at the head of the Gulf, around 450 kilometers from the strait, which is just 45 kilometers wide at its narrowest point.

Iran sets up new base near disputed islands

Citar
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards inaugurated a new naval base on Sunday to reinforce Tehran’s authority over three Persian Gulf islands also claimed by the neighbouring United Arab Emirates, Iranian state TV reported.

The base near the Iranian mainland’s southern port of Bandar-e Lengeh some 1,100 km south of Tehran is the Guards’ fifth in the Gulf. The Guards’ navy chief Gen. Ali Fadavi said missile and marine units have been deployed there.

It lies north of the Iranian-controlled islands of Abu Musa, Greater Tunb and Lesser Tunb that dominate the approach to the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway through which about one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes.

The Revolutionary Guard and the U.S. Navy both patrol the narrow waterway, which Iran had threatened to choke off in retaliation for tougher Western sanctions over its suspect nuclear programme.

Iran took control of the Persian Gulf islands in 1971, after British forces left the region. Since 1992, the UAE has repeatedly claimed the islands and last month at the U.N. General Assembly, it said Iran’s “occupation” violates international law.

In April, a visit by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to the islands inflamed the dispute over the territories and prompted an outcry by UAE and its Arab allies. Tehran later vowed to develop the islands through tourism and other industries, though little has been reported on that since the visit. During the inauguration of the base, Guards chief Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari expressed the hope that new base could support economic development of the islands.

Tehran says the islands have been part of states that existed on the Iranian mainland from antiquity until the British occupied them in the early 20th century.

Tehran also maintains that an agreement signed eight years before its 1979 Islamic Revolution between Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and the ruler of one of the UAE’s seven emirates, Sharjah, gives it the right to administer Abu Musa and station troops there.

There was no agreement on the other two islands. The UAE insists they belonged to the emirate of Ras al-Khaimah until Iran captured them by force days before the UAE statehood in 1971.

Also on Sunday, Iranian newspapers reported that the country has produced a domestically-made drone capable of hovering in midair.

The conservative Resalat said an advanced vertical take-off and landing or VTOL drone will be displayed in February. It quoted Abbas Jam, who is director of the project, as saying that the drone can also fly in silence.

Earlier in October Iran said it obtained images of sensitive Israeli bases taken by a drone that was launched by Lebanon’s Hezbollah movement that month and downed by Israel.

Iran says other drones made dozens of apparently undetected flights into Israeli airspace from Lebanon in recent years. Israel has rejected that.

Iran frequently claims breakthroughs in military technology and other achievements. Most are impossible to independently confirm.

Iranian Fleet of Warships Dock in Sudanese Port

Citar
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Iranian Navy's 22nd fleet of warships docked in Port Sudan on Monday.

The Iranian navy flotilla is comprised of Khark warship and Shahid Naqdi Destroyer. Khark has 250 crewmembers and can carry three helicopters.

According to a report by the Navy's public relations office, the visit is aimed at conveying the message of peace and friendship to the neighboring countries and ensuring security for transportation and shipping against sea piracy.

The report said that the fleet's commanders are scheduled to hold a meeting with Sudanese Navy commander.

The Iranian Navy has been conducting anti-piracy patrols in the Gulf of Aden since November 2008, when Somali raiders hijacked the Iranian-chartered cargo ship, MV Delight, off the coast of Yemen.

According to UN Security Council resolutions, different countries can send their warships to the Gulf of Aden and coastal waters of Somalia against the pirates and even with prior notice to Somali government enter the territorial waters of that country in pursuit of Somali sea pirates.

The Gulf of Aden - which links the Indian Ocean with the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean Sea - is an important energy corridor, particularly because Persian Gulf oil is shipped to the West through the Suez Canal.

IRGC Launches New Naval Zone

Citar
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) established a new Navy zone Sunday morning in a bid to boost defensive measures in waters surrounding Iran's islands in the Persian Gulf.

The IRGC is in charge of safeguarding security in the Persian Gulf.

The IRGC's fifth naval zone, namely Emam Mohammad Baqer (PBUH), was officially inaugurated in Iran's Southern port city of Bandar Lengeh in Hormozgan province in a ceremony attended by IRGC Commander Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari earlier this morning.

As regards the operation area of the zone, Commander of the IRGC Navy Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi said that the fifth zone operations will cover an area from Qeshm island and Naze'aat Islands region to the western waters of the Kish island.

"The fifth naval zone was started to provide operational coverage for the Naze'aat Islands, bring about a turning point and start a new trend in the region," Fadavi stated in the opening ceremony held in Bandar Lengeh.

He said now that the above-mentioned missions have been entrusted to the fifth zone, the IRGC first naval zone will only and specifically be tasked with maintaining security in the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian military commanders have always reiterated Tehran's commitment to the security of the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, and cautioned that foreign military presence will only undermine the security of the strategic waterway.

Iranian officials have repeatedly warned the trans-regional states, specially the US, to pull their troops and warships out of the Persian Gulf.

Iranian officials have also frequently underlined the necessity for the establishment of security in the Persian Gulf through extensive and all-out cooperation among the regional states.

Iranian Navy to Unveil, Use New Vessels in Coming Days

Citar
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Iranian Navy plans to unveil and put into operation new vessels in coming days.

Speaking to reporters here in Tehran on Monday, Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said that the home-made Sina-7 missile-launching warship will be unveiled on Wednesday on the occasion of the National Day of Navy.

Sayyari added that the main structure and the second phase of the construction of Sina-7 warships has finished.

Sayyari announced that the Navy will start the second phase of the construction of Sahand destroyer in Bandar Abbas, the main structure of which was launched in September.

"On Wednesday, two Qadir-class submarines as well as advanced simulators for training Qadir submarine crews will be unveiled and put into operation," Sayyari added.

The commander further said that two hovercrafts, the BH7 hovercraft overhauled by local experts and the home-made SRNX hovercraft, dubbed as Tondar (Thunderbolt), will join the Navy on Wednesday.

Earlier this month, Iran unveiled a highly advanced Tondar hovercraft which can launch missiles and serve as launch pad for drones.

Tondar can be equipped with different types of weapons produced by the Iranian defense industries, including rockets, guns and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).

Commander: Navy Planning Large-Scale Naval Drills

Citar
TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari stressed his forces' capability to conduct large-scale exercises, adding that the upcoming naval drills will even be more massive and cover a vaster area than the previous exercises.

Speaking to reporters here in Tehran on Monday, Sayyari mentioned that the Navy conducts different types of exercises at different levels each year in a bid to maintain its preparedness.

"Of course, we are prepared to conduct any type of massive wargames and definitely our upcoming drills will be larger than Velayat 90 naval exercises," Sayyari announced.

Last week, Sayyar announced that his forces are due to conduct a series of wargames in the country's Southeastern waters early in winter.

Addressing a parliament session here in Tehran on Wednesday, Sayyari briefed the Iranian lawmakers about Navy's performance, and said conducting naval maneuvers was part of his forces' plans to demonstrate Iran's deterrent power.

In line with the same measures, he said, "the Navy will have exercises in (Iranian month of) Dey (December 21, 2012 January 19, 2013) codenamed 'The Great Naval Wargames of Velayat 91'".

He added that the wargames will be conducted in Iran's Southeastern waters.

Late in December 2011, the Iranian Army's Navy staged 10-day wargames, dubbed as Velayat 90, to test its latest achievements in the fields of missile technology and sub-surface vessels.

The wargames were conducted in an area stretching from the East of the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Aden.

Navy conducted test-firing long-range missiles from coasts and navy vessels.

Different types of short and long-range coast-to-sea, surface-to-surface, surface-to-air missiles were tested by Iranian vessels. Iranian submarines also launched smart torpedoes.

Commander: No Warship Allowed to Approach Iran's Territorial Waters

Citar
TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said Iran has a close watch on foreign warships' movements in the regional waters, adding that the Navy has so far prevented warships from approaching the country's borders.

"All movements by regional and trans-regional warships are under our constant watch from the moment they enter our specified zone until they enter the Persian Gulf (protected by the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC)) and we have not allowed anyone to come close to our borders," Sayyari told reporters here in Tehran on the verge of the National Day of the Navy.

"What is clear is that no aircraft carrier has the right to get close to Iran's borders and they (the US warships) just use free waters based on our mutual agreement with some (regional) countries and only go to those countries," Sayyari stated.

Commenting on reports about the deployment of US Stennis Aircraft Carrier in the Persian Gulf, which comes 4 months ahead of the schedule, Sayyari said that the early deployment of the USS Stennis happened "due to the technical failure of the previous aircraft carrier which has recently left the region".

In relevant remarks in July, Lieutenant Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Brigadier General Hossein Salami said IRGC commanders see the US aircraft carriers in the Persian Gulf as nothing more than "rusty iron".

"IRGC members are never intimidated by the hugeness of the aircraft carriers and roaring of the missiles of the US and trans-regional enemies and these equipments are nothing more than rusty iron in their eyes," General Salami said at the time.

In May 2012, another IRGC commander announced that the IRGC naval forces monitoring foreign military moves in the Persian Gulf have recorded an almost one-hour-long video of a US aircraft carrier from a very close distance.

"Forces of the IRGC's second naval zone have recoded a 50-minute video of a US aircraft carrier from 500-meter distance," Commander of the IRGC's Second Naval Zone Ali Razmjou said at the time.
