China’s Flying Valkyrie: JH-7A fighter-bomber female pilots

Citar
Chinese Air Force female pilots have entered PLA Air Force JH-7 “Flying Leopard” fighter-bomber wing for over one year. After honing life in combat forces, these female pilots grow as air gladiators. All this did not come easily. In order to grasp the essentials of the use of precision-guided weapons, they take the initiative to ask the experienced old pilots and repeatedly memorizing a variety of models missile performance parameters and data, then watch the other pilots’ bomb video. Female fighter pilots is a challenging undertaking.

No prior experience can learn from female pilots to fly jets in China. The JH-7A fighters controled by these women is a new type fighter-bomber, and air endurance time is more than 60 minutes, sometimes they will fly several sorties in 24 hours. The complex training and strength of flight make great energy-consuming, particularly for female pilots. With a strong spirit of bearing hardships, they completed a high-intensity training mission.

Besides, China has begun to train female pilots for the country’s most advanced fighter jet. Five female pilots completed solo flights and missions navigating the J-10 on July 29 and 30 in an airfield in North China.

J-10, known as the “Vigorous Dragon” in the West, is a multirole combat aircraft capable of air-to-air combat and ground-attack missions. The five women were among China’s first group of 16 female pilots. They have served in the air force’s combat troops after graduating from domestic flying colleges in 2009.

A total of 328 female pilots have been trained by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force over the past six decades. Women pilots joined the flight mission of the PLA Air Force for the first time on March 8, 1952, when a group of them flew planes over the Tian’anmen Square in Beijing as a flight show.

Since then, they have successfully completed numerous key missions in chartered flight, disaster relief, research-oriented trial flight, and afforestation by airplane sowing, and they have flown in the National Day parade air show.

In 2005, China’s air force began to recruit female combat pilots, following the global trend to enable women to enter military service in the air. In addition to China, 15 other countries have female fighter pilots, including the United States, Britain, Germany, Spain, Israel and Pakistan. China will further train female pilots in flying more types of planes including bombers, early-warning aircraft and tanker aircraft.

Liu Yang, China’s first woman in space, also served as a female pilot in the air force before she was selected as an astronaut.

24 Russian Su-35 jet fighters will be exported to China

Citar
2012-12-08 — A preliminary deal for the sale of 24 advanced Russian Su-35 jet fighters to the People’s Liberation Army indicates the technological hurdles China faces in developing its own J-20, especially in terms of engine technology, military analysts say.

Mainland and Russian media reported last month that Beijing might purchase 24 Su-35s, an updated version of the fourth generation Su-27, for US$1.5 billion. The deal was first proposed by Moscow two years ago.

Beijing expressed interest in purchasing only four Su-35s last year, but that was rejected by Moscow, which had originally expected China to buy 48 planes, Moscow’s Vedomosti business daily quoted an official from Russia’s Federal Service for Military and Technical Co-operation as saying.

It also quoted Igor Korotchenko, head of the Russian Defence Ministry’s public council, as saying Moscow also asked Beijing to sign an agreement not to make copies of the Su-35.

A Beijing-based PLA senior colonel, who requested anonymity, said: “We decided to buy the Su-35 because it’s a fact that our home-made engines have failed to measure up to the Russian products.”

He said China was still playing catch-up, despite recent headlines hailing its progress on military modernisation.

“Engines have been the biggest headache and we are still trying to cope with it,” he said. “The purchase of the Su-35s might help our J-20 project, but there are too many deeper problems hiding in our military industrial system that are hindering our research and development.”

Andrei Chang, editor-in-chief of the Canadian-based Kanwa Defence Review, said the possible Su-35 deal was aimed at obtaining 117S engines, the most advanced Russian engine installed in a single-seat, twin-engined fighter. “Beijing wants the engine [of the Su-35]… because their J-20 project failed to solve the most challenging part – the engine,” Chang said.

The J-20, China’s first stealth fighter, was unveiled early last year. Photographs posted on the internet by mainland military enthusiasts show the J-20 prototype has a stealth body shape similar to the American F-22 and F-35, with a hint of the Russian Su-27 in its turbofan engines. Military experts at home and overseas do not expect the J-20 to enter service until 2018 because of the engine problem.

Beijing’s earlier expression of interest in purchasing only four Su-35s was rejected by Russia because of copycat concerns, the Moscow Times reported.

“Beijing compromised on the size of [the Su-35 deal] … because they think 24 is an acceptable negotiation quantity, while Moscow feels it is worth considering,” Chang said.

The deal could also give a much-needed boost to Russia’s military industry, which desperately needs China’s business because formerly stalwart customers are proving less reliable.

“The Russian side has found their Su-35 production line lacks enough orders to [reduce unit cost and make it a profitable project],” Chang said.

“Russia originally expected some sales to Libya, who promised to order some [Su-35] jets under Muammar Gaddafi’s administration, while Venezuela also planned to place orders,” he said. “But both have now backtracked on those promises due to political upheaval at home.” However, the export of Su-35s to China has stirred up a heated debate among Russian defence industry enterprises and military officials, with opponents to the deal highlighting China’s history of copying Russian weapons, Chang said.

China has long been producing unauthorised copies of the Russian Su-27 – as the Jian-11. It has also designed a two-seat fighter bomber version (the Jian-16) and a stealth version (the Jian-17), and obtained an aircraft-carrier-based version of the Su-30 from Ukraine to produce the Jian-15.

But Beijing insists they are all indigenous designs that just happen to bear some resemblance to Russian fighters.

“I think the Su-35 deal will be submitted to the Kremlin to make the final decision,” Chang said, adding there was still a long way to go before a final deal was signed.

“China and Russia have just signed a memorandum this year, meaning both sides have yet to decide on the deal because they need further rounds of negotiation and discussion involving prices, which models of Su-35 will be exported, what kinds of weapons systems will be involved in the deal, technology transfer and other details.”

Zhuhai Airshow gaining more world recognition

Citar
2012-12-07 — On 13 this month, the 9th China International Aviation & Aerospace Exhibition opened in Zhuhai; 650 aviation and aerospace companies from 36 countries and regions worldwide take part in the event and enjoy the party in the sky.

Compared with the previous Airshow, there are 50 more exhibitors and 5,000 m2 more net indoor exhibition area in this year’s event. Besides, the professional standard and internationalization standard of this year’s event have been elevated onto a new level. Chinese and foreign aviation and aerospace enterprises make use of the exhibition as a platform to get into close contact with one another, seeking supplementary and cooperative development.

Debuts of numerous Chinese “awesome products”

Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), a leader of China’s aviation industry, brings more than 150 aerospace products to the Zhuhai Airshow. 44 products, including the WZ-10, WZ-19, and YL UAV, were debuted, among which a new model of fighter jet attracted extensive attention. Tan Ruisong, general manger of AVIC, said that in this exhibition, AVIC focused mainly on six major lines, namely military aviation, civil aviation, helicopter, general aviation, aviation engine, and transportation system, exhibiting AVIC’s high-tech and new aviation products in all aspects.

China’s air force displayed the strength and image of China’s air force in a more open manner, exhibiting such fighter jet models as J-10, J-8, and JH-7 and other airplane models such as HY-6, KJ-200, Z-8, and Z-9.

Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, China South Industries Group Corporation, China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, and China Aerospace Science & Industry Corporation have all responded actively to this year’s Airshow, sending powerful product lineups to the exhibition. COMAC brought a new regional line airplane ARJ21-700 that is currently undergoing model qualification approval test fly; CASC exhibited real missile launching vehicles and UAV; CASIC focused on exhibiting its arms trade system and virtual confrontation demonstration and more than 50 related arms trade Stronger international flavor of the exhibition.

In the exhibition halls, posters in foreign languages and foreign faces can be seen everywhere. Thanks to the great appeal of the Chinese market, numerous foreign aviation and aerospace enterprises have come to take part in the event. USA’s Boeing, Europe’s Airbus, Canada’s Bombardier, USA’s Honeywell, and General Electric have all sent delegations to the exhibition.

In major air shows home and abroad, there are generally “entertainment programs” of acrobatic flights besides the standard routine of exhibition of latest flying vehicles. In this year’s Zhuhai Airshow, there are famous foreign aerobatic teams besides China air force’ “8.1″ aerobatic team.

The Russian Knights Aerobatic Team sent 5 Su-27 to Zhuhai, marking their return to the Zhuhai Airshow after a separation of 6 years. They will perform flight exhibition as well as static exhibition. Breitling, the only private aerobatic team in the world, has also made their Chinese debut here, presenting breath-taking and extraordinary “cloud walk” to the audience.

Interaction and mutual benefits

These Chinese and foreign aviation and aerospace enterprises gathering in Zhuhai make use of the platform of the show and communicate with one another frequently to seek supplementary cooperation opportunities.

Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China signed C919 passenger plane user agreements with Hebei Aviation Group, Joy Air, and GECAS, and signed airplane purchase understanding memorandum with USA’s Eastern Air Lines. Not only Chinese enterprises are actively connecting to the international market, foreign enterprises are also looking forwards to the Chinese market and taking initiatives to deepen cooperation. Chen Juming, senior VP of Airbus China, said that Chinese aviation enterprises have taken part in all aspects of the design and manufacturing of Airbus’ aircrafts. Currently, all Airbus’ civil airplane models are equipped with parts that are manufactured by Chinese enterprises, and not only that, Chinese enterprises have also participated in the design and manufacturing of Airbus’ latest models.
