Russia's Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC) has reportedly told United Aircraft Corporation, the main shareholder of the Superjet 100, that it has safety concerns about the aircraft.
The committee said on its website that it had: "issues related to the safe operation of the RRJ-95B [Superjet 100]", a local news source, RIA Novosti, reported.
The issues were reportedly discovered during tests by the Federal Air Transport Agency along with other agencies looking into the "substantial increase in the number of incidents connected with the RRJ-95b".
The Russian committee did not disclose what aspects of the aircraft it had concerns over but it seems there are a number of possibilities to pick from. The aircraft entered into commercial service two years ago and has been involved in many incidents since then. The most notable was during a promotional flight in May 2012, when one of the aircraft crashed into a mountain in Indonesia killing all 45 people on board, including press and senior members of the aviation industry.
According to Aeroinside, which reports aviation incidents, the Superjet 100 has been involved in seven incidents since the crash in Indonesia. These range from a loss of cabin pressure on December 28, 2012 and April 10, 2013; a flapless landing on June 5, 2013; and engine failure on June 14, 2013.
Most recently, a Superjet 100 took a belly landing following a test flight at Reykjavik Keflavik International Airport, Iceland. The fourth development aircraft, which joined the programme in 2010, was conducting Cat IIIA autoland tests in crosswinds as well as simulated single-engine approaches.
Despite the fact that any new aircraft programme brings its own challenges and concerns (just look at the 787 Dreamliner), any question of safety or functionality is likely to hit the Superjet 100 programme hard.
Why? Because last July the manufacturers revealed that the programme was running at a loss of $2.1bn and that it was looking at debt restructuring options.Sukhoi said that the debt was largely due to the significant discounts granted to launch customers and interest payments on loans, which were affected by exchange rates. Yet, it plans to break even in 2015 following 40 aircraft deliveries this year.
Y al final dice porque ha perdido tanto... por los significativos descuentos a los launch customer y los intereses pagados a los prestamos...
Saludos.
