The Mirage F1's status, in terms of the number of operational aircraft and Iran's ability to maintain them, is definitely something a mystery. One of the most extensive works I've seen on the issue is recent years is an article from January of this year in Combat Aircraft Monthly magazine. In the article, it gives probably the best history of the Mirage F1's in IRIAF service I have ever seen, definitely the most complete.

Long story short, according the article, they believe the IRIAF (or more likely the MoD) had decided to pull the Mirages from service something this year or the near future due to lack of spare parts and funding shortages. Further, the article claims there are only 5 airworthy Mirage F1s left (two EQ-6s, three BQs) left and they are now based at Chabahar (which we do know to be true).

Now how true the claim about the Mirage F1s being withdrawn from service soon is unknown, but their information on what problems the IRIAF ran into with the Mirages and their previous basing makings some sense. More or less, here are the problems the IRIAF experienced with the Mirages:

1. Parts- It's pretty well known that the Mirages didn't come to Iran alone. With them came the IL-76s, some of which were FULL of Mirage parts and some armaments. However, no new parts seem to have been procured over the years to replenish this supply and there apparently has been no real effort to reverse-engineer any element/parts of the Mirage F1.
2. Maintenance- At times, it seems the IRIAF didn't treat the Mirages very well. When the Mirages were officially moved to Mehrabad they were simply left outside 24/7 which caused minor damage to the aircraft themselves (whose technical manuals strongly advise keeping the Mirages is a cool and dry hangar, not out on the tarmac).
3. Unfamiliarity- Due to the aircraft's systems being quite different than anything else in the IRIAF, they ran into all kinds of problems operating the Mirages. One of the biggest problems was the Mirage's INS system. At first, the pilots had a hard time operating which is why a F-4E was based at Mehrabad for a time (confirmed by Google Earth) to act as a "pathfinder" for the Mirages. Later, the INS system simply failed to operate anymore and currently none of the Mirages have operational INS systems (not very safe).
4. Funding- The French offer for more Mirage F1s is mentioned in the article as well. The offer was for 50 Mirage F1Cs from the French Air Force itself, plus 1,000 Magic missiles (not sure if Mk 1 or Mk 2). The reason for Iran turning down the offer was not because of politics or anything like that, the IRIAF simply had no funding for such a purchase at the time (late 90's). This actually makes good sense, since this was roughly the same time Iran began to put a good deal of funding towards their ballistic missile development.

So, if the article is correct, it seems the IRIAF never had a clear position on how important they thought the Mirage F1s were. At times they expended some effort to maintain them while at other times simply neglected them, plain and simple. The fact that no major effort to reverse-engineer much needed parts as Iran has done with their American-built aircraft is telling as well. Many may wonder that if Iran wasn't producing parts for the Mirages on their own, how are any still in service? For one, it seems no more than 11-12 were ever operational and that was in the late 90's. It only went down hill from there, with the number of aircraft following to current 5. This suggests that all Iran has been doing is cannibalized the non-operational aircraft to maintain the few left with "younger" airframes.

Here are some other interesting tidbits of information I have found about Iran's Mirage F1s.

For one, according to images I have found over the last few years, their number of operational Mirages has some merit. I have found just five confirmed Serial Numbers for Iran's Mirage F1s photographed in the last few years, two EQs and three BQs, just as the article suggests.

On the other hand, I have found information that a newly overhauled Mirage F1 was flown in January of this year (the same time the magazine article came out). If this is true, then the proposed withdrawal date mentioned in the article is likely incorrect. Also, if true this means Iran is planning to keep at least a small fleet of Mirages operational for at least the very near future. Perhaps until more funding becomes available for a more large-scale overhaul program?

Iran Starts Using Home-Made Simulators for Air Force Jets

Citar
TEHRAN (FNA)- A senior commander of the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force stressed Iran's capability to produce sophisticated simulators for fighter jets, and announced that the IRIAF has already started using many of these simulators.

Speaking to FNA, Iranian Air Force Lieutenant Commander for Training General Manouchehr Yazdani said that Iran has achieved desirable progress in designing and producing simulators in the past 3 years.

As regards Sukhoi-24 simulators, Yazdani said the Ukrainian and Russian military advisors who saw the Iran-made simulator for Sukhoi-24 have acknowledged that the Iranian version is much advanced and better than its foreign rival.

He added that Iran is studying building or upgrading simulators for Mirage fighter jets and PC-7 aircraft and many other jets.

He added that Iran has started using F-14 simulators since 3 years ago after the existing simulators were updated and optimized.

Senior Iranian military officials announced in September 2010 that Iran gained self-sufficiency in manufacturing simulators, adding that the country possessed more than 800 home-made simulators then.

In August 2010, the Iranian Army started using two home-made Cobra Chopper simulators in an airborne base in n Iran's western city of Kermanshah.

In recent years, Iran has made great achievements in the defense sector and gained self-sufficiency in manufacturing essential military hardware and defense systems.

In September 2011, the Iranian Air Force's first squadron of home-made Saeqeh fighter jets started operations during the large offensive air drills codenamed "Fadaeeyan-e Harim-e Vellayat III" in Northwestern Iran.

The country has repeatedly made it clear that its military might is merely based on the state's defense doctrine of deterrence and that it poses no threat to other countries.
